Enabling a high renewable, net zero electricity system: Aurora’s open response

Alongside the delivery of the Energy White Paper in December 2020, BEIS launched a consultation which sought views on how the industry is approaching renewable energy financing in order to support ambitious climate targets and enable a cost efficient transition to a net zero electricity system – ‘Enabling a high renewable, net zero electricity system’. The consultation, which closed on the 8th March 2021, called for evidence on how its policies could achieve three main objectives:

  • Maintaining growth in renewable deployment to meet net zero targets
  • Ensuring overall system costs are minimised for electricity consumers
  • Supporting and adapting to innovative technologies and business models

This open response to the consultation combines existing content the GBR team has generated to help our subscribers understand some of the key questions the UK government face in supporting renewable energy deployment in the future. While touching on many aspects of the consultation, this response seeks to address questions corresponding to BEIS’ first key objective ‘maintaining growth in renewable deployment to meet net zero targets’.
