The Road to 2˚C: Challenges and Impacts of the Energy Transition

In this report, we deep dive into the key actions required to safeguard our planet’s climate and restrict the global median temperature increase to 2˚C by the year 2100, relative to pre-industrial levels. A rise of no more than 2˚C was set out in the Paris Agreement of 2015 as the long-term temperature goal, with a further desire to limit it to 1.5˚C.

The analysis in this report is based on our new Global Two Degrees Scenario, which looks at energy market factors in a world in which carbon emissions are compatible with limiting the global temperature increase to 2˚C, which differs to our Central Scenario.

The report also covers viable pathways to limiting global warming to 1.5˚C.

Key questions answered:

  • How could the energy transition impact electrification and the global consumption of fossil fuels?
  • By how much could fossil fuel prices be affected by the change in market fundamentals?
  • What potential implications may be felt by investors and policy makers?
