Nodal Myths, Realities, and Risk Mitigation in ERCOT

View the report from our most recent ERCOT Public Webinar focusing on “Nodal Myths, Realities, and Risk Mitigation in ERCOT”. Key takeaways from the report include the following:

  • Past nodal performance cannot be used to guide the future. Only 10% of nodes in the 90th Day-Ahead ATC price percentile in 2019 remained in the top 50th percentile in 2022; nodal persistence in ERCOT is low.
  • Only 55% of transmission planning in 2018 was realized by 2023; in-depth analysis based on power flow modeling is required to forecast economic capacity expansion and transmission upgrades.
  • Solar overbuild in South Houston can worsen nodal GWA basis; co-siting a battery with a solar asset can mitigate nodal risks to a certain degree.
  • The effectiveness and mitigation power of different strategies need to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis depending on risk types, asset types, offtake prices, and degrees of risk tolerance.
