What we look for

If you're a final-year undergraduate, postgraduate, or recent graduate with a strong academic record, you could be a great fit for our Oxford Graduate Modelling Programme. We value candidates with a relevant Master’s degree or PhD, a strong understanding of energy markets, and proficiency in Python programming. Knowledge of statistical and mathematical optimisation techniques is also highly desirable. We’re looking for candidates who demonstrate:

Our Advisory team delivers tailored analysis to help clients make high-stakes decisions on investments, policy, and strategy. Working closely with global stakeholders, you'll contribute to projects across technologies and markets, supporting major energy transactions and the transition to a low-carbon future.

Research

The Research team produces market-leading insights for over 800 global clients. You’ll contribute to rigorous forecasting and analysis across topics like renewables, battery storage, and hydrogen, supporting decision-makers from governments, utilities, and investors navigating complex, fast-changing energy systems.

This team empowers clients to use Aurora’s tools effectively. From feature development to client onboarding, they bridge software, strategy, and support to help users unlock real value.

Our application process is designed to understand your competencies, strengths, and motivations for the programme, but it’s also an opportunity for you to learn more about us. There will be ample time for your questions, and our hiring team will ensure you receive all relevant information about the assessment process in advance.

Apply online by submitting your CV, academic transcripts, and responses to application questions. These questions are designed to assess your motivation for working in the energy sector and your interest in joining Aurora Energy Research.

Quantitative Assessments

Successful applicants will be invited to complete online quantitative assessments to identify their competencies and strengths.

After analysing test results, shortlisted applicants will be invited to a live 1:1 interview featuring qualitative and quantitative questions.

Assessment Centre

In the final stage of the application process, successful candidates will be invited to participate in virtual or in-person final interviews at our assessment centres. During these sessions, candidates will be presented with two 45-minute conversation-style questions with quantitative case studies and a task to evaluate written or presentation skills.

Once all assessment centres are completed and results are analysed, our Early Careers team will inform you of the outcome. The Early Careers team will keep you updated throughout the recruitment process and let you know when to expect the final decision.

  • Choose a simple layout—selecting simple design elements will make your documents clearer to read
  • Organise your CV with clear subheadings like ‘Personal Statement’ or ‘Education’ to highlight each section effectively

The competencies that will be assessed are:

  • Deductive and inductive reasoning: your ability to understand written information
  • Numerical reasoning: how you think using numbers
Interview Tips

Competency-based Questions

  • Knowledge building: demonstrate your passion and motivation by undertaking further research about the nature of the role, our company and our industry. Showing an interest in what we do, why you’re applying for Aurora, and what makes you suited for the role increases your chances of standing out. ​
  • General communication: provide structured answers to develop a clear and concise communication style.
  • Competencies: arrive to your interview armed with recent examples of a time that you have demonstrated the desirable applicant traits.

Case Study Questions

Our case study questions take the form of market-sizing questions.

  • Take a moment to digest the information.​
  • Ask clarifying questions throughout. The interviewer wants to see your thought process and will prompt you when asked. Try to avoid long periods of silence. ​
  • Begin by breaking down the problem into the fundamental components. Segmenting the question and checking assumptions will create a structured process for finding an answer.​
  • Think about what you are trying to show with your answer and provide reasoning behind each estimation. Answers do not need to be correct, but they are required to be justified.
