The Economics of Utility-Scale Batteries in the NEM

Large-scale batteries are now operational across all mainland states of the National Electricity Market. Merchant revenues to date have been impressive, driven largely by high FCAS and wholesale volatility.

The most extreme incidents of volatility are major system incidents, such as interconnector outages and coal plant failures, which are typically not easy to forecast. In this session, the Aurora team will comb through the data to answer three questions:

  • How frequently do these system incidents occur?
  • How should future battery projects treat such revenue when designing credible central, downside, and upside cases?
  • What are the implications of revenue “lumpiness” for financing merchant batteries?
