Alberta at a Crossroads: Long-Term AIES Forecast and Implications for Investors and Developers

The Alberta Interconnected Electric System (AIES) has gone through a radical shift in generation mix in the last decade with electricity prices increasing from C$46/MWh in 2020 to C$162/MWh in 2022 on average. The province is experiencing an increase in renewable capacity driven by policy incentives, declining technology costs, and corporate Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). However, policy uncertainty for AIES is at a high with the moratorium on renewable energy permits, announced in August 2023, casting doubts on the continued support for wind and solar deployment in the province.

Alongside the Central outlook, we will also present scenarios and sensitivities to reflect a range of possible futures. Key questions we plan to discuss during the session include:

  • What is Aurora’s view for power prices out to 2050 in Alberta?
  • How will captured prices for renewables develop as more wind and solar capacity is installed?
  • How will the federal and provincial policies impact the capacity mix and pool price evolution?
  • What is a sensible low case for project finance?
