Renewables capacity in France, mainly driven by solar buildout, has grown by 63% from 2019–2023. However, challenges like increasing negative price hours and uncertainties around demand and nuclear availability raise questions about renewables’ capture prices.
In other European countries, renewables assets are participating in Balancing Services in addition to the day-ahead market, aiming to increase revenues and mitigate the cannibalisation effect. In France, interest in Balancing Services is emerging. This coincides with the recent liberalisation of the aFRR energy and capacity markets in late 2023 and 2024, where renewable participation is not currently observed—a wide range of potential markets are now available.
