In the French power market, 2024 is experiencing the highest number of negative price hours ever observed, with a quarter of the year still remaining—over 320 to date—more than double the number observed in 2023.
These negative prices are highly correlated with low demand and high renewables generation in the French system, where both internal factors (such as competitive bidding around 0 €/MWh) and external factors (generous subsidies for renewables in neighbouring Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands) are contributing to the increased occurrence of these negative price periods.
