Light at the End of the Queue: Short- and Long-Term Outlook for Solar Economics in PJM

February 13 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm CST

Developers in PJM have shown strong interest in solar projects, with more than 140 GW of nameplate capacity in the interconnection queue at the end of 2024—far exceeding all other technologies. However, PJM has lagged other regions in bringing solar capacity online, in large part due to slow interconnection study processes and challenging permitting issues. Against a backdrop of anticipated load increases, PJM is pursuing a slew of reforms to accelerate the interconnection of new projects. Moreover, changes in technology and federal policy raise questions about the long-term fundamental outlook for solar in PJM.

During this session, we will cover questions related to the short- and long-term outlook for renewable resources in PJM, with a focus on solar, including:

  • How much solar capacity could come online in the next several years, given interconnection queue reform efforts in PJM?
  • How will interconnection costs and project timelines look under PJM’s reformed process?
  • What are the most promising locations and technology arrangements for solar development?
  • How could development be affected by changes in federal policy?
