Hybridization of Renewables and Storage in Brazil

December 11, 2024 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am -03

Brazil’s increasing share of renewables has brought significant benefits but also challenges, particularly in managing generation intermittency and renewable curtailment. Between 2015 and 2024, 70 GW of the 92 GW of newly installed capacity was solar and wind. Currently, 35% of Brazil’s installed capacity comes from these intermittent sources, and this share is expected to rise to 56% by 2060. This shift will be especially pronounced in the Northeast, where solar and wind will represent 78% of the installed capacity by 2060.

To address the existing challenges of intermittency and curtailment, hybrid solutions may offer an attractive pathway. By combining solar, wind, and storage, projects can ensure a more stable generation profile, capitalize on existing grid connections, and unlock additional revenues while also reducing curtailment.

In this session, our team of experts will examine how these strategies can drive both economic and operational advantages, and address the following questions:

  • How does the complementarity of wind, solar, and storage contribute to portfolio diversification and reduce exposure to baseload price volatility?
  • How can hybrid assets optimize grid use, leading to cost savings and additional revenues?
