The Chilean National Electricity System has recently seen unprecedented hourly and locational price fluctuations with curtailment increasing by 81% between 2022 and 2023. This development has been driven by the high share of intermittent renewable capacity consisting of solar and wind which made up ~37% of total capacity by the end of 2023.
As geographical supply-demand imbalances are expected to intensify with intermittent capacity continuing to increase away from demand centers, the power system is facing diverse challenges that will impact power pricing across the country.
