Position
Aurora is a rapidly growing and successful business, seeking a dynamic leader who can support the CEO + MD of APAC to expand our geographic and product offerings, while building a first-class culture.
Structure:
- Reporting to the MD of APAC – with contact several times per week over the first year
- Direct, and sole, line management responsibility for the Consulting teams covering Japan – this work will primarily be focused on transactions, but also policy and strategy analysis
- Oversight of the Research and ultimately Commercial team focusing on Japan
Key responsibilities
- Strategy development:
- Overall ownership of Aurora’s strategy in Japan, including formulating appropriate responses to competitive threats, evolving our software offering, and adapting existing consulting and research offerings to the market
- Commercial:
- Overall responsibility for the Japan commercial success across consulting and research services
- Sales execution (both CP and RP):
- Ability to translate client problems into Aurora solutions in real-time with clients as well as after meetings
- Killer instinct in closing a sale, identifying key success factors and executing
- Sales empathy: Understanding use case, client decision-making process, willingness to pay, etc
- Optimise sales across CP and RP, reflecting their differential value to the business
- Sales strategy: How should we be deploying our scarce commercial resources? Who are the decision makers/brand builders in any markets and how do we get to them? What’s the quickest route to bankability?
- Industry presence:
- Translating insights into market reputation

- Makes a powerful impact on clients in bilateral sessions
- Knows press well (if the press is part of the strategy), engages frequently, and has them as a go-to source

- Content development/thought leadership:
- Drawing upon Aurora’s global research and modelling capabilities, you will lead Aurora’s content agenda in both our consulting and research businesses in Japan
- In leading our consulting work, you will have the ability to add the strategic filter to our consulting analysis for clients, especially with regard to buy-side and sell-side transactions
- Developing our models: Leveraging your position of influence and proximity to clients, you will play an active role in honing and advancing Aurora’s power sector models, esp. those focused on Japan
- Communications:
- A key representative of Aurora in both public and private forums. This might include:
- Hosting the Energy Unplugged podcast from time to time
- Speaking at major conferences to share Aurora analysis, as well as proactively seeking out such opportunities
- Maintaining Aurora relationships with the industry’s leaders. Building and maintaining bilateral relationships with key sector leaders (C-suite within utilities, MDs at investment banks, investment committee at funds, etc.) to provide advice and strengthen their relationship with Aurora and to enhance prospects for consulting engagements and research subscriptions
- This role is the face of Aurora in Japan. You should become well known, and highly regarded, by clients and the industry
- A key representative of Aurora in both public and private forums. This might include:
- Team management/leadership:
- The custodian of team culture and development in Aurora’s Tokyo office with responsibility for overall team satisfaction and for the personal development of all team members
- A key driver of efficiency in our Tokyo office, honing project delivery – including driving efficiencies in model deployment and project staffing – from initial pitch through to completion and potential follow-up
- Company leadership:
- Willingness to take on responsibilities beyond your day-to-day role as and when the need arises (e.g., APAC leadership group, graduate programme oversight, etc.)

- Fluency in both Japanese (N1 level) and English (C1 level or above).
