Market Lead, CAISO

Position

Aurora is a rapidly growing and successful business, seeking a dynamic leader who can support the Head of USA to expand our geographic and product offerings, while building a first-class culture.

Aurora has developed a market-leading suite of research services which provide analytics and insights to key players in energy markets around the world, both public and private. More than 300 companies access these services, representing the vast majority of power generation capacity in the market and projects in development.

Having recently expanded into the USA, this is an exciting opportunity to work on cutting-edge research and inform key decisions taken by our rapidly growing group of US clients. The successful candidate will work in a dynamic, intellectually stimulating, and demanding yet supportive environment. Key responsibilities

Structure

  • Reporting to the Head of North America – with contact several times per week over the first year
  • Direct, and sole, line management responsibility for the Advisory team covering CAISO
  • Oversight of the Subscription Analytics and Commercial team focusing on CAISO. As the US business matures, Research and Commercial will likely evolve to a matrix structure as in Europe in which a CAISO research team reports to both a North American Research/Commercial Head as well as the CAISO Market Lead.

 
Responsibilities

  • Strategy development:
    • Overall ownership of Aurora’s strategy in CAISO, including formulating appropriate responses to competitive threats
  •  Commercial:
    • Overall responsibility for the CAISO commercial success across Advisory and Subscription Analytics services
    • Sales execution (both Advisory and Subscription Analytics):
      • Ability to translate client problems into Aurora solutions in real time with clients as well as after meetings
      • Killer instinct in closing a sale, identifying key success factors and executing
      • Sales empathy: Understanding use case, client decision making process, willingness to pay, etc.
      • Optimize sales across Advisory and Subscription Analytics, reflecting their differential value to the business
  • Sales strategy:  How should we be deploying our scarce Commercial resources? Who are the decision makers/brand builders in any markets and how do we get to them? What’s the quickest route to bankability?
  • Industry presence:
    • Translating insights into market reputation
      • Makes a powerful impact on clients in bilateral sessions
      • Knows press well (if press is part of strategy), engage frequently, and have them as a go-to source
    • Building wide and deep relationships across key external stakeholder sets
  • Content development/thought leadership:
    • Drawing upon Aurora’s global research and modelling capabilities, you will lead Aurora’s content agenda in both our Advisory and Subscription Analytics businesses in CAISO
    • In leading our CP work, you will have the ability to add the strategic filter to our Advisory analysis for clients especially with regards to buy-side and sell-side transactions
    • Developing our models: Leveraging your position of influence and proximity to clients, you will play an active role in honing and advancing Aurora’s power sector models, especially those focused on CAISO
  • Communications:
    • A key representative of Aurora in both public and private forums. This might include:
      • Hosting the Energy Unplugged podcast from time to time
      • Speaking at major conferences to share Aurora analysis, as well as proactively seeking out such opportunities
      • Maintaining Aurora relationships with the industry’s leaders:
      • Building and maintaining bilateral relationships with key sector leaders (C-suite within utilities, MDs at investment banks, investment committee at funds, etc.) to provide advice and strengthen their relationship with Aurora and to enhance prospects for Advisory and Subscription Analytics
      • This role is the face of Aurora in CAISO. You should become well known, and highly regarded, by clients and the industry
  • Team management/leadership:
    • The custodian of team culture and development in Aurora’s Oakland office, with responsibility for overall team satisfaction and for the personal development of all team members
    • A key driver of efficiency in our California office, honing project delivery – including driving efficiencies in model deployment and project staffing – from initial pitch through to completion and potential follow-up
  • Company leadership:
    • Willingness to take on responsibilities beyond your day-to-day role as and when the need arises (e.g., North American leadership group, graduate program oversight, etc.)
